Gourmet Hints: Shopping the Show

A veteran Gourmet Housewares Show shopper, David Babcock has a couple of tips that can help make a trip to the show more successful:

• Have a mission: “You need to know what your plan is, why you are going,” Babcock says. “Are you buying things that are already part of your merchandise selection or are you looking to buy new stuff?”

• After setting your goal, make a list: “If you don’t know what you are looking for it can be overwhelming and you end up missing a lot of product.”

• Don’t impulse buy: “I look for new stuff and tend to skim over the stuff I already have in stock. Don’t go into a show and fall into a pattern of buying $10,000 of this and $10,000 of that.”

There’s a lot going on at the Show this year, but please put our Opening Night Party on your “must-do” list. Not only is the Party where we unveil this year’s Gourmet Gold winners -- a chance to see some of the best products featured at the show -- but it also gives you the chance to network with a select audience: other gourmet retailers and top vendors.

The reason we call it The Gourmet Housewares Show is that there is no better place to shop for specialty kitchenware and tabletop products, and no better place make important industry connections (and new friends). And it benefits a great cause, so enjoy!

P.S. The Opening Night Party kicks off Tuesday May 8th at 6pm at The History Center, 65 East Central Boulevard, in downtown Orlando. To buy tickets to the party or to check out the Culinary Center events and educational seminars, go to www.thegourmetshow.com.

FEATURE: SOS Honors Chef’s Catalog During Opening Night Party

Join Chefs Catalog’s Tim Middleton, and chef Rocco DiSpirito, in a celebration of the work Share Our Strength has done to address childhood hunger in the United States, during the Opening Night Party at the Gourmet Housewares Show, which kicks off May 8th at 6 p.m.

Chefs, which has been a longtime sponsor of Share Our Strength, will receive the anti-hunger organization’s first ever Retailer Humanitarian Award.

For years, Chefs Catalog has donated a portion of its proceeds to SOS and has also encouraged its vendor partners to do the same, says Middleton, who is senior VP of marketing for the catalog retailer.

“We plan to continue to support Share Our Strength and the work they do,” Middleton says. DiSpirito, too, has long supported the anti-hunger organization.

“Chefs Catalog has stepped up to the plate without anyone pushing or prodding them,” says Joe Allegro, who is director of special events for Share Our Strength. “They would also ask their vendor partners to match a donation and we are very grateful to them for helping us work to end childhood hunger. That’s why we named them Retailer Humanitarian of the Year.”

The Gourmet Housewares Show’s Opening Night Party, which is being held at Orlando’s History Center, also unveils this year’s Gourmet Gold Award winners which highlight the show’s breakthrough culinary products.

A percentage of each ticket sold for the event benefits Share Our Strength and the party is also a great way to meet other retailers and exhibitors and to exchange ideas and information. Shuttle service to the party is free, and starts running at 5:30 pm from the Orange County Convention Center.

RETAILER PROFILE:
Clementine's Kitchen

David Babcock runs Clementine’s Kitchen, a 5,000-square foot kitchenware store in Del Rey Oaks, California. In addition to a cooking school, an extensive wine and gourmet food selection, tabletop and high end cookware, Clementine's Kitchen also has a cafe where tired shoppers can nosh and gather their strength for more shopping.

Babcock, who is also a member of the Gourmet Housewares Show’s advisory board, is headed to Orlando next month, where he plans to test his own shopping muscles by searching the Gourmet Housewares Show for new products. Babcock is restocking as he gets ready for an exciting year at Clementine's Kitchen: he's ratcheting up local attention for his store by kicking off a cable television cooking program.

“We’re doing the cooking program with Dorothy McNett, a local cooking instructor, food writer and TV show personality, who also teaches at our cooking school at the store,” Babcock says. The new show, called “Perfect Cooking with David and Dorothy”, takes advantage of Babcock’s culinary background: he trained at the famed Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and taught at the California Culinary Academy. He says the show will air starting next month on local cable and on the store’s web site: clementineskitchen.com
