Viva Las Vegas!
We are excited to be able to offer our exhibitor and retailer partners the stand-alone Gourmet Housewares Show that you have been asking for. And if you haven’t been to Las Vegas lately, we think you'll be surprised at how cosmopolitan and versatile this city has become. The retail scene alone is worth the trip--not only to shop--but to take in new merchandising strategies in one of the most densely built retail environments around. Now we aren’t saying that you are going to want to install enormous animatronic sculptures of Roman gods in your store, as they have at the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, but in terms of generating retail excitement, Las Vegas has some tips for everyone. Join us May 6-8.

I look forward to seeing you there.

FEATURE: Now Opening At the Sands: The Gourmet Housewares Show!

You asked for it and now you’ve got it! The 32nd Annual Gourmet Housewares Show will open in its own location at the beautiful Las Vegas Sands Expo Convention Center.

The Show, which runs May 6-8, 2008 will be co-located with George Little Management’s Global Home Textiles™ and Global Home Decor™ shows at the Sands Expo. The National Hardware Show®, Housewares Show™ and Lawn and Garden World™ shows will run simultaneously in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

According to show manager Susan Corwin, retailers and exhibitors wanted a clearer separation between the upscale housewares market and the National Hardware Show. Such a separation would help reemphasize the Gourmet brand, Corwin says.

"By shifting into the Sands Expo Convention Center, The Gourmet Housewares Show will attain an individual presence that so many of you had asked for, yet we’ll still benefit from the city co-location,” Corwin says, adding that the new positioning still allows for cross traffic from serious hardware stores, while discouraging non-relevant traffic. “And,” she added, “as in the past, continuous shuttle services will run between both show venues and hotels.

Retailer Profile: Kitchen Window

Doug Huemoeller , president and general manager of the kitchenware store  Kitchen Window, in Minneapolis , is among those retailers who say they are happy the Gourmet Housewares Show has separated its actual physical location from The National Hardware Show.

“I’ve always felt the Gourmet Housewares Show deserved to stand on its own,” says Huemoeller, who buys for his store and is happy that the new location allows a more focused gourmet buying area. He adds it makes the show easier for retailers both in hardware and home to concentrate on their specific shopping lists. Huemoeller, who also runs a cooking school at Kitchen Window, says he is also very excited about the Las Vegas location, from both a retail and culinary perspective.

“If you look at the retail space in Vegas it is absolutely amazing because of the tourist density: Vegas has everything in terms of retail,” Huemoeller says.

He  finds Sin City a new culinary Mecca, as well, noting that many significant chefs in the United States have launched restaurants in that town. “Given the opportunity to have all the retail and culinary advantages, plus all the shows and pretty much any other attraction you want from spas to golf to gaming, it is an exciting place to have a show,” Huemoeller says.

Kitchen Window's gorgeous Culinary Center has helped the retailer build a strong reputation as a foodie resource.

Good Rep: Toward building better relationships between vendors and representatives

Challenge: Anita Liwette, president of Loofah-Art, wants to get better pre-show support from her reps in 2008.

Gourmet 365: What type of pre-Show input do you get/receive from your reps this year?
AL: Not enough!  We have a few reps that are awesome in communication and input.  However, it is amazing that all reps aren't like that -- after all, we should be a team working for a common goal!

Gourmet 365: How can exhibitors motivate their reps to hustle retail attendance to the Show?
AL: I have always been of the opinion that no one can really motivate another person.  If all of the key components for a successful business partnership are in place -- communication, sample and materials support, listening, fair compensation, etc.-- it is up to individuals to motivate themselves.  Exhibitors and reps should be partners in all efforts and together offer incentives for our retail customers.

Gourmet 365: You say the recent Gourmet Show gave you a chance to visit with retailers. How would you advise retailers to prepare for future shows?
AL: Don't stay locked into old patterns -- the "beeline" straight to the safety of the "known." Have a plan, but keep your eyes and mind open for new possibilities.
